BIRD WATCHING

Big Blue Ranch is a haven for bird enthusiasts, offering a unique opportunity to observe an incredible variety of species in their natural habitats. From the rolling hills and tallgrass prairie to the woodlands and the 20-acre lake, the ranch is teeming with avian life year-round.

Greater Prairie Chicken Viewing

One of the ranch’s most celebrated residents is the Greater Prairie Chicken, a rare and fascinating bird now thriving in our preserved native prairie. During late April and early May, you can witness their spectacular mating ritual at hilltop leks (booming sites). The males perform an elaborate dance of stomping, strutting, and “booming” to attract mates.

We offer a special outing for Prairie Chicken viewing, complete with transportation from the Lodge to blinds carefully set up with the expertise of Dr. Paul Jonsgaard from the University of Nebraska. These blinds provide exceptional views of this remarkable display.

  • Cost: $50 per person (minimum of 2 people, plus lodging for two or more nights)
  • Availability: April 1 – 30
  • Reservations: Call or email us to secure your spot, as space is limited.

Year-Round Bird Watching Opportunities

Every season at Big Blue Ranch brings unique birdwatching experiences. Situated along the Central Flyway, our ranch is a stopover for many migratory birds, including ducks, geese, trumpeter swans, and pelicans in spring and fall. Some even nest near the lake or stay year-round, weather permitting.
